Plastic

A couple of weeks ago in Te Ngahere we were learning to use the correct structure for persuasive writing. Our topic for the persuasive writing was’ Should we use Plastic bags in supermarkets?’ I am a believer that plastic shouldn’t be used in supermarkets.

What would you prefer, Plastic or no plastic? Most would say no plastic but there is also that other percent that would prefer plastic. I strongly believe that plastic bags should not be used in super markets. Here are my reasons.

Plastic bags are made from petroleum-based products. These release gases into the atmosphere which open a hole in the o-zone layer causing heat to rapidly increase. Because of the heat increase icebergs melt and water levels rise, which means sooner or later the earth could be flooded. People around the world have calculated, graphically, about how much of the earth will be consumed by water.

Natural resources, these are the best but soon will become the worst. Seafood to be precise is becoming more and more contaminated because of pollution. For example fish eat plastic that could be contaminated. Other fish could eat that fish. Then we eat that fish and we could get a disease or sickness. The pollution that eventually heads to sea contaminates sea life that we eat which basically can make us ill.

Then we have our reputation, the thing that brings tourists to our beautiful country. They support us with money because of the way we look. But if we continue to pollute and litter our homes and towns tourists will start to fade in numbers.

These are some reason why I think plastic bags shouldn’t be used in supermarkets not only for our environment but our reputation as a clean green nation.

Visual Mihi

Last week we started our visual mihi. Basically we had to make a google drawing and add pictures of whatever would remind us of the English version. We had to add pictures that would translate the mihi  into a visual mihi. For example I chose the bird “Kaka” because it’s featured in the first part of the mihi. This was supposed to help us remember what it means in English. It helped me quite a lot.

Writing goals

Last week in Te Ngahere we were identifying our next learning goals. We used a rubric sheet to mark our level. The levels that we were supposed to be at were 4, 5 and 6. I was five and six. The goals were : make my ideas original, so the reader can connect with them, strengthen my reflections (opinions) about my information.

Math Goals

Last week in Te Ngahere we were identifying three goals that we needed to learn in maths. My goals were from both stage seven and eight Ican sheets. They were: Identify lowest common multiple of pairs of numbers to 10, compensation from tidy numbers and find equivalent ratios with a common factor or multiple. I chose these goals because I did not know them. The reason I want to achieve these goals is so that I can finish stage seven and eight.

William Pike

A few weeks ago in Te Ngahere  we read a book called “The Rep”. It was about a boy preparing to be picked for the rep team. At the end of the story the character was angry until he was told about a man who climbed a mountain with only one leg. His name was William Pike. WIlliam Pike lost his leg and got it amputated because him and his friend were climbing Mt Ruapehu when it erupted and rocks fell and crushed his leg.  He recently made a live stream talking about his adventure at Mt Scott in Antarctica. It was really interesting because even though he only has one leg he never gave up.

The Curse Of Being Pharaoh

In week one of term three we started an activity for reading. It was a story that came with the questions. Our focus was to answer a variety of questions. Also the story was called The Curse Of Being Pharaoh.

Japan and its Natural Disasters

Japan has suffered the worst of natural disasters. The 2011 earthquake and tsunami hit. Or the 2004 earthquake and tsunami. Not only tsunamis and earthquakes but they have had typhoons, volcanic eruptions any etc. Can you guess how much damage they caused and the amount it cost to repair everything?

The 2011 earthquake that hit Tōhoku and spread over 200 miles. The earthquake itself reached up to a magnitude of 9.1. One of the biggest in the world. This then caused the 133 foot or 40.5 wave that caused damage over Miyako, Iwate and Tōhoku. Nearly 16,000 people died, over 6000 injured and about 2500 went missing.

Another catastrophe was Typhoon Muifa. This typhoon occurred on the 27th of July to the 15th of August. The typhoon was deadly as it had a speed of 259 Kmph. That's the speed of a supercar. The typhoon caused damage to Japan, Russia, North and South Korea, the Philippines, Taiwan and Micronesia. 22 people died from this typhoon.

Lastly the eruption of Mount Sakurajima. The eruption caused black smoke that rose over 5000 meters into the air. This smoke spread over a one mile radius. The area was restricted. Lightning bolts were captured sparking around the smoke.

Japan is a lovely place to visit but beware of the dangers that can happen.

In week two Te Ngahere started to write reports. I finished my first one so I started my second one about natural disasters in Japan. My focuses were to use topic sentence, complex sentences and one idea in a paragraph.
